PREFACE.

After my return from Newfoundland,in the year 1791, I wascurious to look back into what hadbeen done, in former times, on thesubject upon which I had myself beenjust employed. I accordingly lookedover the Newfoundland Entries, and the Newfoundland Bundlesamong the books which belonged tothe late board of trade; and I thenpursued the subject through theRegisters of the present committeeof council for trade and plantations.

I was very much struck with thematter and reflections furnished bythis research; and I wished that theuseful information, which I had derivedfrom this retrospect, might be seenby those, who had at that time toconsider the subject of Newfoundland.Hence arose the present History; andas the same subject is now before theHouse of Commons, I have venturedto print it, and throw it among theother materials under examination.

If this public enquiry had not beeninstituted, the story here told wouldhave been confined to the circle forwhich it was originally intended.

J. R.

April 1793.
