Researches conducted by the author in the PharmacologicLaboratory of the University of Illinoisduring the past five years, as well as the experiencegained by the use of this form of medication inprivate practice, form the basis of this publication.
To give the best results, the sweet tablets describedin this formulary should be freshly preparedon physician's order; thereby securing efficiencyand palatability to the highest degree, and enablingthe physician to prescribe the dose and combinationneeded for the particular case in hand. Tobring these tablets into the category of extemporaneouspreparations, the author has elaborated theprocess of "fat covering" which makes the preparationof these tablets no more difficult than the makingof pills or of suppositories.
In the pages that precede the formulary, an attempthas been made to present the principlesthat have been used in the elaboration of the[8]formulae, so that formulae for other medicamentssuitable to this form of administration may bedeveloped.
Concise directions on the care and use of the tabletmachine have been included, to enable any pharmacistequipped with an inexpensive tablet machineto prepare these tablets without difficulty.
The author is keenly aware of the fact that thereare probably still some imperfections in the formulaegiven herein; though he has spared neithertime nor labor in making them as perfect as possible. Therefore, comments and criticisms, as well assuggestions, are most welcome, and will receivecareful consideration.
It is the author's hope that this booklet may beinstrumental in robbing childhood of one of itsterrors, namely, nasty medicine; that it may lessenthe difficulties experienced by nurse and motherin giving medicament to the sick child; and helpto make the doctor more popular with the little ones.
