PREFACE.

This little Work was undertaken toexcite the attention of those children,who live in the country, to the variousobjects by which they are surrounded;and to furnish those residing in themetropolis and other large cities, withsome information relative to rural economy,which their situation preventsthem acquiring by personal observation.

The author acknowledges that sheis totally incompetent deeply to discussthe phenomena of nature, or the scienceof agriculture; she should indeed[iv]think it inconsistent to introduce scientificresearches into a Work of thiskind. But a slight investigation ofthe simple arts by which the nourishmentof man is effected, or of some ofthose wonders of creative power whichdaily present themselves to view, cannot,in her opinion, be deemed an improperexercise even at an early age.
