PREFACE.

The Success that has everywhere attended the Efforts ofthe British Arms, during the Courseof this just and necessary War, willrender this Period of our History resplendent,even to latest Ages. Itseems, therefore, requisite to give themost accurate and distinct Accountsthat can be obtained of these Successesin the remoter Parts of theGlobe, that the Nature and Consequencesof them may be the betterviunderstood here. The People ofBritain are as well entitled to know,and will with equal Pleasure read,what has been effected for their Serviceat Bengal, as at Goree; and acceptas kindly the Laurels broughtthem from Asia, as those that comefrom Afric or America.

In this we follow only the Customof other Nations. The Portuguese andthe Dutch have not only generalHistories of their Atchievements inthe Indies, and separate Accounts oftheir respective Settlements, but numerousMemoirs of particular Expeditions,in which they have beenexceeded by the French. We shouldtherefore be wanting to ourselves, if,having performed as great Things asthey, and having as authentic Vouchers,we should willfully suffer theviiMemory of them to be lost, and theMerits of our deserving Countrymenswallowed up in Oblivion.

The following Pages will shew,how one of our finest Settlements inthe East Indies was suddenly sackedand subverted by the Impetuosity ofa young Man, intoxicated with SovereignPower; in what Manner itwas recovered and restored; thePeril to which it was again exposedfrom the same Person; and the Meansby which it was not only rescuedfrom a Second Destruction, but theCauses of these Calamities removed;the British Interest placed on a moresolid Basis than ever; with additionalAdvantages that were never hoped;so that Stability may be truly said tohave been extracted from intestineTroubles, and Public Miseries renderedviiithe Source of Public Safety andPublic Ben
