“The Young Continentals” series dealswith the experiences of four boys in theAmerican Revolution. One of them, NatBrewster, is from the hills about Wyoming,Ben Cooper is from Philadelphia, while thePrentiss twin brothers come from Boston.
In the first book of the series, “The YoungContinentals at Lexington,” Nat Brewsterplayed the leading part—a part full of daringand enterprise. In the second book, “TheYoung Continentals at Bunker Hill,” EzraPrentiss replaced Nat as the principal figure,while in the present volume, George Prentisssteps into the foreground.
The first book dealt with the revolutionfrom the stirring of the wrath of the coloniesto the first blows struck at Lexington and ConcordBridge. The second began where the firstended, and related the events that took placeduring the siege of Boston, including the fighton Breed’s Hill and ended with the evacuationof the city by the British.
[4]The present, or third, takes up the threadof the great struggle where the second laid itdown; it deals with the preparation for defendingNew York City, describes the battleof Long Island, the crossing of the Delawareand the capture of the Hessians at Trenton.
The fourth book, “The Young Continentalsat Monmouth,” takes in the encountersaround Philadelphia, including the battle ofGermantown, and ends with Washington’sbrilliant success at Monmouth. Ben Cooperfills the eye in this volume; and during thecourse of the story appears the celebratedMolly Pitcher, the girl who served a gun atMonmouth and whom Washington afterwardmade a sergeant on the field of battle. Thisvolume is now in preparation.
