CRUISE OF THE ‘DUNOTTAR CASTLE’

[v]

FOREWORD

T

The first suggestion of this Record ofa very charming trip came from SirDonald Currie, the genial and courteousHost of our palatial ‘HouseBoat.’ Others pressed the task uponme; but no great pressure was required for so congeniala work. Indeed, I need hardly say that the preparationof the story of our Cruise has given me infinite pleasure.

My efforts have been ably seconded by the artistic skillof my fellow-guests, Dr. Lennox Browne of London, andMiss Cecilia G. Blackwood, whose facile pencils have contributedto the work many clever and beautiful illustrations.I am indebted to Mr. T. Maclaren for the architecturaldrawings of the Cathedral and the Earl’s Palace at Kirkwall;while a few of the pictures are taken from photographsby Miss Munn, another of our gifted passengers.[vi]The whole have been reproduced with great skill by thevarious engravers, with the assistance, and under thesupervision, of Mr. John Gulich, who has also contributeda few original drawings.

It is perhaps fitting that I should offer an apology tothe good folks on board the ‘Dunottar Castle,’ who maynot have been prepared for this realisation of the words ofthe poet:—

‘A chiel’s amang ye takin’ notes,
And, faith, he’ll prent it.’
