PREFACE.

“It seems to me,” said a philosopher once,“that there are no entirely good men in theworld, and none completely bad. Single outyour best man, and you will find that he lacksperfection in some part of him; and examineyour worst, and you will see that he has at leastone redeeming quality.”

In this book the men mostly verge towardsbad: but some are better than others. Becausethey are merely human, they act according totheir lights. You may meet others like them anyday if you go out and about, and most of themgive extremely good dinners. Till they are foundout, you consider them amusing: afterwards, beingbetter than they, you instantly set them downas most pernicious scoundrels, and shake handswith yourself, and write to your tailor to ordermore noticeable phylacteries on the next newsuit. This is called “keeping up a healthy moraltone,” and does a great deal of good in theworld.
