"A most interesting book of gossip, which, consideredfrom the point of view of the generalpublic, contains not a dull line from the first to thelast. The letters have all the freshness of thebest class of feminine correspondence."
In December, 1879, M. William Henry Waddingtonresigned the Premiership of France, and the followingmonth, accompanied by his wife, left Paris fora winter of rest and recreation in Italy, chiefly inRome. The letters from Madame Waddington toher mother and sister, which constitute "Part I" ofthis volume, describe this journey and residence. Those forming "Part II" relate the incidents of asimilar Roman sojourn some twenty years later, M.Waddington having died in the meantime. The twoseries together compose a picture of life and societyin the Italian capital with a wide range of contrastand comparison, corresponding with those of Londonand Moscow in the well-known "Letters of aDiplomat's Wife" by the same writer.
