6The cultivation of the Ear is of the greatestimportance.—Endeavour early to distinguisheach several tone and key. Find out theexact notes sounded by the bell, the glass, thecuckoo, etc.


Practise frequently the scale and otherfinger exercises; but this alone is not sufficient.There are many people who think to obtaingrand results in this way, and who up toa mature age spend many hours daily in mechanicallabour. That is about the same, as ifwe tried every day to pronounce the alphabetwith greater volubility! You can employ yourtime more usefully.


8There are such things as mute pianoforte-keyboards;try them for a while, and youwill discover that they are useless. Dumbpeople cannot teach us to speak.


Play strictly in time! The playing ofmany a virtuoso resembles the walk of anintoxicated person. Do not take such as yourmodel.


Learn betimes the fundamental principlesof Harmony.


Do not be afraid of the words Theory,Thoroughbass, Counterpoint, etc.; you willunderstand their full meaning in due time.


Never jingle! Play always with energyand do not leave a piece unfinished.


You may play too slow or too fast; bothare faults.


Endeavour to play easy pieces well andwith elegance; that is better than to playdifficult pieces badly.


10Take care always to have your instrumentwell tuned.
