THE NEW PROJECT

Tom Swift appeared to be calm,although in reality he was aboutas excited over his latest inventionas he ever had been about anythingin his life.

"I'm sure it's going to work,Ned!" he said eagerly to his chumas they neared Tom's private laboratory."With my new device Ihope to learn more about theplanets. I want to start soon—"

"Listen here!" broke in NedNewton. "If you're thinking ofgoing to Mars or the moon, justcount me out! I've gone with youto many strange places and havenever kicked. But this—"

"Hold on, young fellow!" interruptedthe youthful inventor withan amused chuckle. "I've nothinglike that in mind YET! All I wantto do is show you my new 'spaceeye.'"

"Can't say as I like that word'yet,'" Ned muttered darkly. "ButI'll take a look at your new jiggerif you'll promise not to shoot methrough space in a rocket or cannon-ball!"

"Word of honor I won't," promisedTom, crossing his heart withmock solemnity. "Well, here weare."

The two boys had reached thelaboratory, a small building at therear of the spacious lawn surroundingTom's father's home andclose to the extensive work of theSwift Manufacturing Company atShopton.
