WHAT  THIS  BOOK  IS  ABOUT

For a short space Mr. Riley forsook thewhite for the red rose, and wrote The Ladyof the Lawn as a result. He has now definitelyreturned to his own country, and inhis new novel is told the story of ManiwelDrake, who has lost an arm; but maintainshis cheerful and genial nature, and BaldwinBriggs, whose motto is “All for my-sen.”

The story deals with one of thosecontrasts of conflicting personalities thatMr. Riley loves to draw. There aredramatic episodes as well as characterstudies, and the local colour that Mr. Rileyloves to introduce. Above all thereblows through the book the breath ofthe Moors, without which a Riley bookwould not be a Riley book.
