The title of this story takes you at once to its subject. Thehero, Philip Fletcher, is a right true English lad, but he has aFrench connection on the mother's side. This kinship induces himto cross the Channel in order to take a share in that splendidstruggle for freedom known as the Huguenot wars. Naturally hesides with the Protestants, distinguishes himself in variousbattles, and receives rapid promotion for the zeal and daring withwhich he carries out several secret missions. At length, however,he is entrapped in Paris, with other prominent Huguenots, on thatterrible St. Bartholomew's Eve, when the tocsin gave the signalat midnight for the massacre to begin. It is an enthrallingnarrative, and the chapter which deals with the escape of the heroout of that monstrous city is one of the most thrilling in a storywhich is full of interest.
