It is probable that there has beenwritten much excellent poetry on theother side of the Atlantic with whichwe are unacquainted, which perhapshas never crossed the water at all.We should therefore be very unwiseif we professed to give here, even ifsuch a plan could be executed withinthe compass of a few pages, a generalreview of American poetry. Allthat we propose is, to make somecritical observations on the writersbefore us, accompanied by such extractsas shall not unworthily occupythe attention of our readers.
