All Saints' Day was near.It was very cold. At fiveo'clock, night came. Mariannehas risen slowly from her seatand gone to close the window,which she had opened for afew minutes to let some fresh air into theroom. Ah! how dark and cheerless is theweather! On the pavements it must bedifficult to walk, so thickly coated are theywith slippery mud—mud that is everywhere,mud and standing puddles. A hard winteris commencing. The charcoal seller willwant a great deal of money.
Ah, well—that is an expense that has beenforeseen. The charcoal man and the bakerhave to be paid; and with courage and healthit can be done.
