To Her Majesty
HARUKO
Empress of Japan

January, 1902

Ever since my childhood, thy sovereignbeauty has been all to me in benevolenceand inspiration.

How often I watched thy august presence inhappy amazement when thou didst pass alongour Tokio streets! What a sad sensation I hadall through me when thou wert just out of sight! If thou only knewest, I prayed, that I was oneof thy daughters! I set it in my mind, a longtime ago, that anything I did should be offeredto our mother. How I wish I could say myown mother! Mother art thou, heavenly lady!

I am now going to publish my simple diaryof my American journey.

And I humbly dedicate it unto thee, our belovedEmpress, craving that thou wilt condescendto acknowledge that one of thy daughtershad some charming hours even in a foreign land.
