PREFACE.

The title-page alone would serve for a prefaceto the present volume. It is the record of avoyage, during the summer of 1859, in companywith a distinguished landscape painter, along thenorth-eastern coast of British America, for the purposeof studying and sketching icebergs.

It was thought, at first, that the shores in theneighborhood of St. Johns, Newfoundland, uponwhich many bergs are often floated in, would affordall facilities. It was found, however, upon experiment,that they did not. Icebergs were toofew for the requisite variety; too scattered to bereached conveniently; and too distant to be minutelyexamined from land. One needed to be inthe midst of them, where he could commandviews, near or remote, of all sides of them, at allhours of the day and evening.

For that purpose a small vessel was hired totake us to Labrador. Favoring circumstances directedus to Battle Harbor, near Cape St. Louis, inthe waters of which icebergs, and all facilities forsketching them, abounded.
