PREFACE.

The appearance of this little book needs a word ofexplanation. While at the front with the UlsterDivision, the late Captain A. P. I. Samuels, had kepta very complete record of events, and collected all thematerial available, with the object of being in a position,some day, to publish an account of the doings of theDivision, and particularly of his own Battalion, the11th Royal Irish Rifles (South Antrim Volunteers.) Ithas been willed, however, that he should not be spared tocarry out his intention. Like so many of his gallantcomrades he gave his life for his country, being killedin action on September 24th, 1916. His name is nowon Ulster’s Roll of Honour, among those whosedeath has brought unspeakable grief to thousands of ourhomes, and yet has filled the hearts of Ulstermen andwomen with pride, and bequeathed such renown to ourProvince as will last while it endures.
