AN INTRODUCTORY NOTE.

This is the sixth volume of the Journal of the Society. It continuesthe series so auspiciously begun years ago and which has beenadded to annually. These six volumes represent a great amount ofwork and contain a vast deal of historical material relative to theIrish element in the composition of the American people. As weprogress with our researches, even we ourselves are quite astonishedat the facts brought to light, facts showing in a far greater degreethan anticipated, how tremendously important was the part takenby the Irish element in American colonial life and in the early andsubsequent career of the republic itself. The present volume setsforth much matter of interest and value in this regard, and is inevery way a worthy companion for the volumes of the Journalthat have preceded it.
