Introduction
When I first knew Betty Wales she was afreshman at Harding College, with a sedate, comical roommate named Helen Chase Adams, and a host of good friends, who stood by herand one another all through the four years oftheir college course. Mary Brooks—afterwardMrs. Hinsdale—was a sophomore whenBetty entered college, but the others, the threeB’s, Roberta Lewis, Eleanor Watson, RachelMorrison, and Katherine Kittredge,—all belongedto the “finest class” of 19—. So didMadeline Ayres, though she was a year late injoining it and felt obliged to make up for losttime by being a particularly lively and loyalHardingite during her abbreviated coursethere. Georgia Ames first appeared in 19—’sjunior year, and joined “The Merry Hearts,”a society that Betty and her friends had organized. But Georgia the first, as Madelineused to call her, was only a figment of Madeline’simagination; it was a delightful coincidence when,at the end of the year, a realGeorgia Ames appeared to step into the placeleft vacant by her departed namesake, whoseshort but strenuous career at Harding hadmade them both famous.
All these things and many others may befound in the four books entitled respectively“Betty Wales, Freshman,” “Betty Wales,Sophomore,” “Betty Wales, Junior,” and“Betty Wales, Senior.” This story was writtenbecause some of Betty’s friends were notsatisfied to leave her at the end of her senioryear, but wished to hear what she did next.If any of them still want to know what happenedto her after she came back from her tripabroad, why, perhaps some day they may.
