CHAPTER I.

Ada Nicoli was justeighteen when my storyopens. She was thedaughter of a wealthyNew York stock-broker,who took little thoughtof the welfare of hiswife and children. Indeed,he had little timeto devote to anythingoutside the interests ofWall Street. He wentto business early inthe morning before hisfamily were down, andreturned in the eveningjust in time for dinner,so weary and exhaustedthat very often he dinedalone in his study to savethe necessity of changinghis business suit forevening dress.
