“Oh, who can gaze upon the relics here,

And not their sacred memories revere?

Who can behold the figures of our sires,

And not be touched with Freedom’s hallowed fires?”

Introduction

The members of the Society of Friends, or“Quakers,” residing in the American colonies, were sadly tried during the struggle by thosecolonies against King George. The Quakerprinciples forbade warfare, but the Quakerhearts were often as loyal to their country asany about them. Some of these found a wayto reconcile principles with patriotism and, entering the American army, were known as“fighting Quakers.” David Owen, Peggy’sfather, was one of these, and the first book ofthis series, “Peggy Owen,” told of some dangersthat his brave little daughter underwentto serve the cause she loved. In “PeggyOwen Patriot” is the story of a winter inNew Jersey at Washington’s camp, Peggy’scapture, her unwilling stay in New York, andher final escape from her British captors inthe Carolinas. Her pony, “Star,” who appearsagain in this story, shared many of herdangers. “Peggy Owen and Liberty” completesthe series.
