The background and details of this story have beencarefully authenticated. The founding of the colonyInessa, however, is not an actual event. It is the unionof a number of colony traditions. It is therefore correctin character and spirit.

The tale was written at the MacDowell Colony atPeterborough, New Hampshire, and I am constantlymindful of the inspiration given to me by the beautifuland solitary surroundings in which I there worked.
