ALL THE ANXIETIES FOR MY RETURN.
The matter here submitted has been accumulatedupon several hunting trips in thewilderness, and many excursions from timeto time into the woods and fields about home. The author has for some years kept more orless extensive field notes, and has taken numerousphotographs of objects, scenes, orincidents by the way.
Not all of the narrative is concerned withthe chase, but all has to do with, or is in someway attributable to, the wanderlust that fromboyhood days has cast its spell over the authorat uncertain intervals, and from time to time, has compelled a pilgrimage nearer or fartherinto the regions of that freedom found onlywhere man is not.
If in the heart of the reader it sets vibratingagain some chord once sounded by the breathof the forest, or stirs to harmony some strings[Pg vi]hitherto not attuned to the music of the greatoutdoors, the mission of this volume will nothave been vain, for it will then have assistedin a modest way the interpretation of thatmedium of expression of which Bryant hassaid,
