The Story of the Boy Who Sangin the Streets
This is the house in which JOHANN SEBASTIANBACH was born.
This house stands in the town of Eisenach inGermany. It looks very much the same today as itdid when Sebastian was a little boy. Many peoplego there to visit this house because the little boygrew to be a famous man.
[Pg 4]In Eisenach there is a statue of Bach near thepalace.
In the same town in which Sebastian was bornthere stands on the top of a hill a very famous castlebuilt many hundreds of years ago.
This castle is called the Wartburg.
As a boy little Sebastian used to climb the hill withhis friends, and they, no doubt, had a happy time playingabout the castle grounds. In one of its great hallsthe minstrels of Germany held their Song Contests.
[Pg 5]When Sebastian was old enough he used totravel afoot, just as the minstrels did; his purposewas to go to hear fine organ players. Once as hesat weary by the roadside someone threw a herringto him so that he might eat as he rested.
Little Sebastian's father was named JOHANNAMBROSIUS BACH. He, too, was a musician, ashis people had been for many years.
