The Following Of Christ.

Book I.

Chap. I.
Of following Christ,
and despising all the vanities of the world.

1. He that followeth me, walketh not indarkness, saith our Lord, Johnviii. 12. These are the words of Christ,by which we are admonished that we mustimitate his life and manners, if we would betruly enlightened, and delivered from allblindness of heart.

Let it then be our chief study to meditate onthe life of Jesus Christ.

2. The doctrine of Christ surpasseth all thedoctrines of the saints: and whosoever haththe Spirit, will find therein a hidden manna.

{4}

But it happeneth that many, by frequenthearing the gospel, are very little affected:because they have not the Spirit of Christ.

But he who would fully and feelinglyunderstand the words of Christ: must study tomake his whole life conformable to that ofChrist.

3. What doth it avail thee, to discourseprofoundly of the Trinity: if thou be void ofhumility, and consequently displeasing to theTrinity?

In truth, sublime words make not a man holyand just: but a virtuous life maketh him dearto God.

I had rather feel compunction, than know itsdefinition.
