The object of this little work, and of others of itsfamily, which may perhaps follow, is, like that ofthe “Rollo Books,” to furnish useful and instructivereading to young children. The aim is notso directly to communicate knowledge, as it is todevelop the moral and intellectual powers,—tocultivate habits of discrimination and correctreasoning, and to establish sound principles ofmoral conduct. The “Rollo Books” embraceprincipally intellectual and moral discipline;“Caleb,” and the others of its family, will includealso religious training, according to the evangelicalviews of Christian truth which the authorhas been accustomed to entertain, and which hehas inculcated in his more serious writings.
