THE WANDERERS.
On a certain sunny afternoon in May, when all theworld and his wife were walking or driving inPiccadilly, two figures appeared there who clearlydid not belong to the fashionable crowd. Indeed,so unusual was their aspect that many a swiftglance, shot from carefully impassive faces, madefurtive scrutiny of them as they passed. One ofthe strangers was an old man who might have beena venerable Scandinavian scald come to life again—aman thick-set and broad-shouldered, with featuresat once aquiline and massive, and with flowing hairand beard almost silver-white.
