In presenting the Public with apopular History and Topography of the County of Salop, with aDirectory of its Inhabitants, the author has to acknowledge hisgreat obligations to the literary and official gentlemen of thecounty, who have so freely furnished his agents with valuableinformation, as well as to those who have honoured the publisherwith immediate communications; and also to the numeroussubscribers who have so liberally patronised the work. Asauthenticity is the grand desideratum of Topography, all possiblecare has been taken to avoid errors. Every Parish,Township, Village, and Hamlet, with all the principal Residencesand Farm Houses in the county have been visited for theaddresses, and to authenticate the necessary information. It is, therefore, hoped that the great variety of subjectscompressed within its pages will be found complete andsatisfactory to its numerous patrons, and that the volume will befound an acquisition either to the library or the office.
The Plan of the Work embraces a General History andDescription of Shropshire, containing the spirit of all that hasbeen previously written on the subject, extracted from ancientand modern authors, and from the voluminous Parliamentary Reportsof Public Charities, Population, &c., &c., together witha variety of Agricultural, Commercial, Statistical, Biographical, and Topographical Information; and comprehending a Survey ofAntiquities, Roads, Rivers, Railroads, Minerals, PublicBuildings, Charities; together with a Chronology of Remarkable
