CHAPTER I
THE WHITE GLEAM

As Johnny Thompson bent over the black watersof the river he thought he heard a stealthy movementbehind him. Before he could decide whetheror not his eyes had deceived him he caught the reflectionof a sudden white gleam on the dark surfaceof the water. At the same time somethingtold him to dive, and dive he did. With the rocket-likespeed that was his, he shot straight into thewater, then away beneath the surface. He rosesome ten yards downstream.
