In so far as the collection of information isconcerned, the advantages of travel may oftenbe over-stated. So much has been written,so many facts are upon record about everycountry, even the most remote, that ajudicious and persevering study of existingmaterials would no doubt enable a reader tofill himself with knowledge almost to repletionwithout leaving his chair. But for the formationof opinion, for the stirring and enlivenmentof thought, and for the discernment of colourand proportion, the gifts of travel, especiallyof travel on foot, are priceless. It was withthe design and in the hope of securing suchprizes, that I undertook last year the pilgrimageof which these pages give account. I cannottell whether I have succeeded in winningvithem; and still less whether, if won, they aretransferable. I therefore view these letters witha modest eye. They were written mainly inlong hot Uganda afternoons, after the day'smarch was done. The larger portion hasalready appeared in the Strand Magazine, andwhat has been added was necessary to completethe story.
They present a continuous narrative of thelighter side of what was to me a very delightfuland inspiring journey; and it is in the hopethat they may vivify and fortify the interest ofthe British people in the wonderful estatesthey have recently acquired in the northeasternquarter of Africa, that I offer them ina connected form to the indulgence of thepublic.
