The author did not live to revise the originaldraft of “Mr. Waddy’s Return,” and therefore, when his other novels were published, shortly afterhis death, this one was not included. On looking itover again, after the lapse of years, it seemed to hissister, Miss Elizabeth W. Winthrop, too good to letdie; and it was placed in the hands of Mr. Stevensonto give it such revision and condensation as it maybe presumed that the author, had he lived, wouldhave given it himself.
