The contents of this little book hardly justifyits title. There are whole ranges of ‘MinorHorrors of War’ left untouched in the followingchapters. The minor poets, the pamphletsof the professors, the people who write to thepapers about ‘Kultur’ and think that this isthe German for Matthew Arnold’s over-workedword ‘Culture,’ the half-hysterical ladies whooffer white feathers to youths whose hearts arebreaking because medical officer after medicalofficer has refused them the desire of theiryoung lives to serve their country. Surely,as Carlyle taught us, ‘There is no animal sostrange as man!’
