This little volume is respectfully inscribedto the schools of Marshall County, Kansas—itspatrons, teachers and pupils—in humbleacknowledgment of the great good theseschools have done for our citizenship and ourgovernment.
This poem was not written to bring fame, nor to waft a fortune; for, fame and fortuneare but small incidents when compared withthe higher things in life. It was composedmore for pleasure—the pleasure of meditatingon, and the commemorating of, thesplendid people who were among the manyfine early settlers of this state; and likewiseto impart this joy to the readers who mayperuse this little story of pioneer days.
Then the old “Spelling Down”—once socommon in schools and so brilliant for itsacademic value, and keen social enjoyment—shouldbe rescued from oblivion; yea evenrevived.
If the sending forth of these simple stanzasshould bear any fruit, may some of thesebe the happy harvest.
