PREFACE

This little book does not claim to be a comprehensivetreatise on the art of cataloguing books, nor is it intendedfor the use of the expert in bibliography. The rules embodiedare those generally recognized as necessary for theproper cataloguing of a collection of books. By simpleillustrations the author has endeavoured to deal with thosedifficulties which he has found most frequently arise andcall for careful consideration. Information concerning theprinting of catalogues has been added in order to makethe book more complete.

If this Manual should prove a help to the betterunderstanding of the true principles of cataloguing, andis found to be of practical assistance to those engaged inlibrary work, the object of its compilation will have beenattained.
