As time passes, the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition,fathered by the great President Jefferson,should shine brighter and brighter amidst the otherpages of American history.
The purchase of the Province of Louisiana wasopposed by many citizens. They were ignorant andshort-sighted; they asserted that here was a uselessburden of waste land fitted only to the Indian andthe fur-trader; that the people of the United Statesshould occupy themselves with the land east of theMississippi.
But wiser men prevailed. The expedition launchedboldly out into the unknown, to carry the flag now intothe new country, and perhaps to make possible theownership of still a farther country, at the PacificOcean.
Time proved the wisdom of President Jefferson’spreparations made even before the territory had beenbought. Just at the right moment the trail across thecontinent was opened. Louisiana Territory was valuedat its
