The stories that follow belong to three categories.Some of them were gathered from thenegroes, but were not embodied in the tales ofUncle Remus, because I was not sure they werenegro stories; some are Middle Georgia folklorestories, and no doubt belong to England; andsome are merely inventions.
They were all written in the midst of dailywork on a morning newspaper,—a fact that willaccount in some measure for their crude setting.
