PREFACE.

The Author is quite aware of the defects of this littlestory, many of which were unavoidable, as it first appearedserially. But, as Uncle Alec's experiment was intendedto amuse the young folks, rather than suggest educationalimprovements for the consideration of the elders, shetrusts that these short-comings will be overlooked by thefriends of the Eight Cousins, and she will try to makeamends in a second volume, which shall attempt to showThe Rose in Bloom.
