This little work is the outcome of some littlethought, born of hesitation. To be clear, I shouldmention that some years ago I completed a somewhatexhaustive work on the violin, the first portionof which reached the stereotype stage, but unfortunatelyowing to a fire the plates were destroyed. Otherbusiness pressing, the work was laid aside. In themeantime other books on the violin have been published,a fact which might be taken as renderingany further work on the subject superfluous. However,it has been suggested to me by some musicalfriends that if I could produce a popular work whichcould be issued at a low price it would be wellreceived. Buoyed up with this hope, I set to workwith the object of presenting in a concise form suchinformation as I have thought necessary or at leastivof interest to every one who elects to take up theviolin, either as an object of recreation or seriousstudy. Time alone will prove whether or not theappearance of this addition to the literature of theviolin is justified.
In order to facilitate my labours I have consultedthe leading British and foreign authorities on theviolin and kindred instruments. I have also duringmany years devoted much time to the inspection andstudy of genuine old instruments.
