PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

This handbook has been written with the purposeof giving brief comprehensive information tothe business man on the subject of the businesslibrary as an indispensable earning factor in theconduct of business enterprises. It aims to tell howto organize and maintain a business library, whatto do in order to get the best results from it, and toshow by concrete illustrations, gathered from theexperience of firms maintaining library service, whatthe business library is worth as a financial asset.

The subject matter is not designed to set forththe work of any one class of business libraries, butis a composite study of many. It records businesslibrary facts as observed by the author during tenyears of service as a business librarian, and as such, may be also of value to librarians contemplating theundertaking of business library work.

The references given at the conclusion of eachchapter have been selected from a large mass ofprinted material on the subject, on the basis of practicalsupplemental reading only and are not designedto be exhaustive reference lists.

The author makes grateful acknowledgment toher Library School class-mate, Renee B. Stern, nowEditor of "The Woman's Weekly," for most helpfuladvice, and to her friend, Virginia Fairfax, Librarian,Carnation Milk Products Company, Chicago, forgenerous criticism and correction of the manuscript.
