There was trouble in the land,all on account of Christmas. Menstood bewildered and women were distracted,not knowing what to do. Thetrouble was that Christmas had becometoo small. Once there was room enoughin it and to spare. Only a few of theinhabitants of the earth brought theirtreasures into it. But little by little theworld learned of the beauty of Christmasuntil everybody, almost, wantedto get into it, and not only into it himself,but he wanted to bring all his relativesand friends, every one of themladen with packages and bundles, untilat last Christmas became crowdedto suffocation. There was not room toturn round. Everybody was so huddledand jostled, and there was so much[Pg 2]scrambling and pushing, that some peoplequite lost their temper, and even inthe palace of Christmas looked sour.
