CHAPTER I.

MARCH TO DOL.

The city of St. Malo was now moreclosely reconnoitred by the commander-in-chief,as well as by General Elliot, thequartermaster-general, and other officers,who were unanimously of opinion that,from its vast strength, a long time—amonth at least—must elapse before it couldbe reduced; and as the heavy cannon andmortars requisite for such a siege were yeton board the fleet, the idea of any assaultupon the place should be relinquished,more especially as French troops wereadvancing against us from Normandy,Maine, and Anjou.

The approach by land to the small isleof Aaron on which it is situated is by amole or causeway, three-quarters of a milein length, by fifty-four feet in breath.and this was daily covered by the tide withslimy weeds.

The approach by sea was narrow, welldefended by batteries, and was otherwisedangerous to vessels venturing withingunshot. On the north St. Malo wasquite inaccessible, in consequence of theheight of the rocks and strength of thefortifications which crown them.
