PREFACE

The study of birds (and a most delightfulstudy too) is steadily on the increase, and a great deal of good is beingdone. A great deal more might be doneif older people would take more painsin impressing upon all children never toharm in any way our feathered friends.

I have prepared this little book of simpletrue tales, not for the literary criticto pull to pieces, but simply to give pleasureto all lovers of pets, hoping it maybe of some help to those who wish totame and train their birds or cats.

I especially want it to teach childrento love and be kind to all living creaturesGod has put upon the earth. He hasnever put anything here that has notVIsome use, no matter how some may fearand hate the lower animals.

Never hurt anything, and only killwhen it is necessary, and then do it inthe quickest and most humane way.

I shall be glad to hear from any childrenwho have pets, and will aid themall I can in taming and training them.
