INTRODUCTION

IT is not of the author’s ownmotion that the followingessays are given to thepublic in this form. Withcharacteristic modesty, Mr.Cleveland was willing thatthese addresses should lie undiscoveredand unread in thelimbo of pigeonholes or ofyellowing newspaper-file; andyet the thoughtful reader willbe the first to proclaim thatthese utterances are neither insignificantnor ephemeral.Their very themes are age-old.Before Rome was, Patriotismand Good Citizenship were thepurest and loftiest ideals of theancient world; and, through[6]the ages that have followed, those nations have been noblest, bravest and most enduring inwhich love of home and love ofcountry have been most deep-seated.

Mr. Cleveland’s address onGood Citizenship was deliveredbefore the Commercial Club ofChicago in October, 1903; andthat on Patriotism and HolidayObservance before the UnionLeague Club, of the same city,on Washington’s Birthday,1907. Now, with Mr. Cleveland’ssanction, they appear forthe first time in book form.

No one can scan these pages, however hastily, without sayingto himself, “Here is a man whopreaches what, for a lifetime,he has been practicing.”

Not all patriotism finds expression[7]in the heat and joy ofthe battlefield; nor does goodcitizenship begin and end onelection day. Mr. Clevelandhas, in himself, proved that anupright and fearless chief magistratein the White House maybe as true a patriot as the leaderof a forlorn hope, as lofty atype of citizen as a Garrison ora Phillips. No public man ofthis generation has been morebitterly assailed than GroverCleveland; none has met withmore unswerving serenity theattacks, fair and foul, of thosewhose selfish interests havemade them his sworn foes.

That famous phrase, utteredyears ago, “We love him forthe enemies he has made,” is atrue saying.
