One morning of high summer three pilgrims mettogether in the City of Genoa to sally forth in searchof sunshine and the Middle Ages.
At least that was what the Poet said, for sunshineand Ancient Stones were the passions of the Poet'slife.
The Philosopher insisted that we went in search ofHappiness.
It is no matter. But in fact we did meet one Julyday of sweltering sunshine in Genoa, the WesternGate of Italy, which is a city of grateful shadows,whose narrow streets defy the brilliant sun.
This is a book of simple delights, a chronicle oflittle pleasures, so I shall not talk much of Genoa,although to my mind she is the most Italian of all thegreat cities of Italy. Nor shall I speak of Florence, orNaples, or Venice, or Rome. Doubtless, like me, youhave loved them all.
