Peggy looked very sad and wan afterher mother's departure, but her companionssoon discovered that anythinglike out-spoken sympathy was unwelcome.The redder her eyes, the moreerect and dignified was her demeanour;if her lips trembled when she spoke, themore grandiose and formidable becameher conversation, for Peggy's love of longwords and high-sounding expressionswas fully recognised by this time, andcaused much amusement in the family.
A few days after Mrs. Saville sailed,a welcome diversion arrived in the shapeof the promised camera. The ParcelsDelivery van drove up to the door, andtwo large cases were delivered, one ofwhich was found to contain the cameraitself, the tripod and a portable darkroom, while the other held such acollection of plates, printing-frames andchemicals as delighted the eyes of thebeholders. It was the gift of one whopossessed not only a deep purse, buta most true and thoughtful kindness, forwhen young people are concerned, two-thirdsof the enjoyment of any presentis derived from the possibility of beingable to put it to immediate use. As itwas a holiday afternoon, it was unanimouslyagreed to take two groups anddevelop them straightway.
