The object of the present slight work is to gathertogether, from various available sources, records ofthe lives of some of the world's notable Sisters. It does not pretend to be by any means exhaustive, but rather suggestive. The Editor hopesthat, while it may be found to be interestingreading generally, to young women, for whom itis more especially designed, it may be stimulatingand consoling. The absence of such a recordhitherto can alone justify the appearance of thisfragmentary and imperfect work. Such as it is,its preparation has necessitated no small amountof labour and research. If it should be the meansof quickening some life, or of arousing somesleeping affection to a warmer zeal, or more activedevotion, its object will be answered.
The sources from which information has beenobtained are varied. It should be stated that, inregard to the sketch of Susanne Kossuth, the factsare chiefly taken from a little work publishedmany years ago in Boston, U.S.A. As to Eugéniede Guérin, the authorities are "Eugénie de Guérin:Journal and Fragments"; "Lettres d'Eugénie deGuérin"; and "Maurice de Guérin: Journal,Lettres, et Poemes," all published by Mons.Victor Lecoffre, Paris. For the extracts fromthe Journals of the Margravine of Baireuth, theEditor is indebted to "The Memoirs of FredericaSophia Wilhelmina, Princess Royal of Prussiaand Margravine of Baireuth," published by Mr.Colburn in 1812. The chief biographical informationconcerning Miss Caroline Herschel consistsof her Memoir by Mrs. John Herschel, and tothat most interesting book indebtedness must beacknowledged.
Several of the lives mentioned have, duringrecent years, formed the subject of independentworks; but a short record of them cannot be outof place in the annals of Noble Sisters.
