The reader will regret, perhaps, the absenceof continuity in the following chapters; that will rapidlydisappear, however, when he sees the characteristicfigures he should better know and love for a long timeto come. A scruple has always guided me: to write thetruth. I have been strict in writing nothing but what Ihave seen or heard.
