PREFACE

The writer of this book makes no claim to originalinvestigation. The materials for such investigationdo not exist to any considerable extent in thiscountry. The results of such an investigation wouldform a book not suited to this series.

The writer has attempted to set forth briefly theconditions which brought about the invention ofprinting and to present the main lines of discussionconcerning the inventor. He has consulted withsome care a considerable number of authoritiesand has endeavored to present the results in comprehensiveshape.

The writer believes that the history of any particularevent is a part of the general history of the timein which it occurred. He has, therefore, endeavoredthroughout the historical portion of this series toindicate the general historic background of all particularhistorical events sufficiently to set these particularevents in their relations to what was going on at thetime in the world generally.

In addition to the supplementary reading indicatedin the several volumes which follow, the writer venturesto hope that the students will familiarize themselveswith some good general text book on modernhistory.
