Tennyson.
Linnæa’s first waking thoughtscarried with them the conviction thatlife was different—why was it? Ah,she remembered! Last night’s scenecame back to her with a rush offeeling that brought the warm colourto her face. Then came the colderand more prosaic feelings which sooften come with the morning. Gwendolinewould soon be like the others—shewould go over to the popularopinion, and Linnæa would be thrustupon her own companionship as before.These thoughts were passingthrough her mind when she heard atap at the door, and a voice called,“May I come in?”
Linnæa opened the door, andthere stood Gwendoline, her armsfull of knick-knacks of all sorts.
“You are only dressing! I havebeen dressed for an hour. I awokeearly and thought I would rise anddeck my cubicle; but I haven’t roomfor half the things I brought. Asyou haven’t many things in yours, Ithought perhaps you might like afew. Would you care for them?”
“Very much indeed! It was verykind of you to think of me!”
“Oh, not at all, if you will let mehelp you to put them up, for that isthe best fun! Here is rather apretty picture we might hang oppositethe bed.
