PREFACE

My publisher tells me that this volume willbe regarded as a sequel to ‘The Minor Horrorsof War,’ and he assures me that sequelsare not a success. I have no doubt mypublisher is right, because if publishers werenot invariably right, and authors invariablywrong, how can one explain the fact thatpublishers are proverbially prosperous andprominent people, whereas authors are notoriouslypenniless and obscure? In spite ofhis warning, however, I propose to publishthis little volume, for there still ‘air somecatawampous chawers in the small way, too,as graze upon a human pretty strong’—as‘one of them inwading conquerors at Pawkins’s’called them—that were unmentionedin my earlier book.

I am indebted to the kindness of theEditor and Proprietors of the British MedicalJournal for permission to reprint Chapters I toIX and Chapter XI, and to the Editor of The[Pg ii]Journal of Economic Biology for permission toreprint the twelfth chapter, of this book, andI offer them my thanks. I also thank Mr.Hugh Scott (the University Curator in Entomology),and Professor G. H. Carpenter of theRoyal College of Science, Dublin, for muchkindly help.

A. E. SHIPLEY.
